Description

With its high altitudes, volcanic soil, and fantastic processing, Burundi enjoys one of the finest reputations in all of East Africa. Migoti Coffee Company, a speciality coffee producer, is based in Migoti Mountain, Burundi, just 30km from the centre of bustling Bujumbura.

Founded in 2015 by engineers Dan Brose and Pontien Ntunzwenimana, the company aims to connect Burundian coffee farmers with international buyers through quality coffee processing and transparent supply chains.

The company operates two washing stations at altitudes between 1700 and 1900 metres above sea level, serving a community of over 50,000 people. These stations produce high-quality Arabica coffee, primarily from the Red Bourbon cultivar, known for its excellent flavour profile.

Migoti Coffee employs both permanent and seasonal workers, many of whom are women. They provide local farmers with education on coffee tree maintenance to improve yield and quality, revitalising an industry devastated by the civil war from 1993 to 2003.

In 2016, Migoti Coffee began operating a modern coffee washing station in the heart of Pontien’s home community, sparking new hope for the future as farmers invest in their coffee farms. Quality coffee production is just one of the entrepreneurial projects Pontien has planned for his community. He and Dan are actively developing a small hydropower plant to provide low-cost renewable energy to the local community and the coffee washing station. They are also investigating new crops for the coffee farmers, such as essential oil plants, which will be processed into essential oils at the Migoti Washing Station.
